Peace Lily (Spathiphyllum )🌱

As an indoor plant, the Peace Lily is a favorite among plant lovers. There are different species of this plant, and its scientific name is Spathiphyllum. The Peace Lily is popular worldwide for its white flowers and dark green leaves. This indoor plant blooms twice a year, and once the flower blooms, it lasts for about two months. With proper care, this plant can live for many years. The Peace Lily also improves indoor air quality by purifying the air. It removes benzene, formaldehyde, ethylene, ammonia, and other harmful substances from the indoor environment, making the air cleaner. The Peace Lily is among the top 10 air-purifying plants approved by NASA. This plant can survive well with minimal care.

Care Requirements:

  • Light: Indirect bright light is preferred by Peace Lily plants. With the right amount of light, this plant produces more flowers and stays healthy. Although they can survive in low light, they produce fewer and smaller flowers. Direct sunlight can burn the leaves and flowers, so it should be kept out of direct sunlight. To fully enjoy the beauty of the Peace Lily, keep it in bright, indirect light.

  • Watering: Peace Lily does not like overwatering at all. If you give too much water, the plant can rot and die. Depending on the size of the pot, you need to decide how much water to give. Insert your finger into the soil to check if it is wet. If the soil is wet, there is no need to water; if the soil is completely dry, water as needed. In winter and monsoon, the amount of watering should be reduced. It is important to ensure the soil does not become completely dry.

  • Temperature and Humidity: Peace Lily prefers a warm and humid climate. A temperature between 20-28°C is ideal for this plant. If the temperature drops below 7°C, this plant struggles to survive. The plant can live well in normal humidity and grow healthily. To maintain the right humidity level, the leaves should be misted at least once a day during the hot season.

  • Soil: Peace Lily prefers soil with good drainage. The soil mixture should be prepared to prevent water accumulation. A suitable soil mixture could be: 25% garden soil, 25% cocopeat, 25% compost manure, and 25% perlite. Adding one large neem shell and one large bone meal can enhance the soil.

  • Fertilizer: If you apply fertilizer regularly in the right amount, the plant will produce the best quality flowers. Apply slow-release fertilizer once a month, except in winter. If the pot size is 6-8 inches, apply compost to the soil 3-4 times a year. If the plant does not flower, use NPK 19:19:19 or 20:20:20.

  • Propagation: Peace Lily can be propagated through root division. If a stem with roots is separated and placed in moist soil, it will grow into a new plant within a few days. Propagation can be done anytime except in winter.

  • Pests: Peace Lily is not usually attacked by pests. However, if pests do attack, mix 5 ml of neem oil in 1 liter of water and spray the entire plant.

  • Toxicity: Peace Lily plants are generally toxic, so keep them away from children and pets.

Dianthus Chinensis

We know flowers as symbols of love and respect. Not everyone likes all types of flowers. I would like to introduce you to a flower called Dianthus chinensis. If you look at this flower well, you will fall in love with it. According to Google, the original habitat of Dianthus chinensis is North China, Korea, Mongolia, and South Russia. Dianthus chinensis flowers are called by different names in different parts of the world such as China pink, Chinese pink, and Indian pink. In the flowers of the shrub, there is an abundance of pink color, but different textures are seen like Petunia. It is a winter flower, so it is only seen in winter in South Asia. It is not seen much during the rest of the year. However, in places or countries where the climate is winter all year round, this flower can be found all year round. The flowers are usually bright pink, but they are also red, white, and shades of purple. The leaves are narrow and green. This plant is usually not more than 30-50 cm tall.

Cultivation:

  • Light: If you don’t keep it in full sunlight for 6-8 hours, this plant will lose its original beauty. If you keep this plant in a completely shaded place, it will grow well, but the chances of flowering will be reduced. Therefore, you can keep this plant on the balcony or roof during winter. At other times of the year, this plant will survive if left in a shaded area.
  • Watering: Check the soil at the base of the plant and water it when the soil is completely dry. Watering when the soil is wet will rot the seedlings and the plant will die. Water should always be given around the base of the plant. Flowers and leaves do not need water.
  • Soil: Dianthus chinensis likes well-drained peaty soil. The ideal soil mixture is 30% garden soil, 40% compost manure, and 30% sand or cocopeat. This plant does not like acidic soil but prefers alkaline soil. You can mix water with chalk in the soil.
  • Fertilizer: Soak 2 handfuls of mustard seeds in a bucket of water for 2 days and apply after 12-14 days. Chemical Fertilizer: 5-7 grains of DAP once a month keeps the plant healthy and flowering.
  • Pruning: When the flower dries, small seeds grow there. If those seeds are not cut, the flower cannot grow properly. So, when the flower dries, it should be cut.
  • Propagation: Propagation of Dianthus chinensis is usually done in three ways:
    1. By planting seeds.
    2. By cutting the branch.
    3. By root division method.

When the flowers dry, collect the seeds and scatter them in wet soil in September or October. You will get new small seedlings in 10-12 days. Flowers will appear within 3-4 months. Also, cut any branch of the plant, soak it in root hormone, and plant it in wet soil. A new plant can be obtained this way. The propagation done by planting the seedlings separately is called the root division method. Through this, new seedlings are also obtained.

Pests: Dianthus chinensis does not attract many pests. If you want to keep the plant healthy, mix 5ml of pesticide in 1 liter of water, shake it well, and spray it on the branches and leaves of the plant, except for the flowers.

Gerbera daisy

Gerbera daisy image

Overview:

Gerbera daisies are flowering plants found in Asia, Africa, and South America. According to Google, plant theorist J.D. Hooker introduced Gerbera as a South African flower in a famous Botanical Magazine in 1889. At that time, this plant was known as Transvaal daisy or Barberton daisy. In Africa, it is still called African daisy by many. Gerbera flowers are naturally yellow, orange, white, pink, and red. The diameter of the flower ranges from 6 cm to 12 cm. As a decorative flower, this Gerbera flower is in demand all over the world. Gerbera is the number 5 flower among the world’s favorite flowers. Gerbera is a winter flower but blooms all year round in places that are neither too hot nor too cold.

Growth & Care:

  • Light: Gerbera likes morning sunlight. Flowers and plants are best if kept in morning sunlight for at least 3-4 hours every day. If placed in a shaded area, the plant becomes weak, and the flowers lose their beauty.
  • Watering: Gerbera flowers require regular watering. The soil at the base of the plant should be checked, and if the soil is dry, water should be given accordingly. If water is given when the soil is wet, the plant may die due to root rot.
  • Temperature: Gerbera can grow well in beds where the temperature is 25-27 degrees during the day and 10-15 degrees at night.
  • Soil: Well-drained loamy soil is ideal for Gerbera plants. The soil mixture should be made in such a way that it does not retain water. The ideal soil mixture is 25% sand, 25% compost, 25% cocopeat, and 25% garden soil, with one handful of neem peel and half a spoon of fungicide. Sometimes the soil should be loosened so that air and light can enter. If fungicide is mixed with loose soil, the chances of pest attack are less.

Fertilizer:

Gerbera flower plants love fertilizer. Therefore, one handful of compost fertilizer can be applied after 15-20 days in winter. In summer, half a handful of compost fertilizer can be applied after 2 months. Dry banana skin, cut it into small pieces, and mix it with the soil at the base of the plant to get good flowers.

  • Liquid Fertilizer: Add 4-6 handfuls of compost fertilizer to 10-12 liters of water, along with 3-4 handfuls of mustard seeds and one handful of neem leaves, and keep it in a shady place for 5-6 days.
  • Pruning: The leaves of the Gerbera flower plant that are touching the soil should be cut.

Propagation:

There are two methods of propagation for Gerbera flower plants. The first is to collect seeds from flowers and plant them in wet soil to get new seedlings. Another method is to obtain new seedlings by root division.

Pests Attack:

Gerbera plants often attract pests. Mixing 5ml of neem oil in 1 liter of water and spraying it every 15-20 days will reduce the possibility of pest attack.

Description: There are at least 100 species of trees native to Madagascar. The Kalanchoe flower plant is very easy to grow, making it popular as a houseplant worldwide. In temperate regions, this plant can be kept both indoors and outdoors. However, it is better to use it as an indoor plant in places with low temperatures. Kalanchoe flower plants have succulent green leaves that are shiny. Some varieties have variegated or differently colored leaves. Kalanchoe flowers are usually small and come in various colors like pink, white, red, orange, and yellow. Flowers appear during winter or early spring.

Care Requirements:

  • Light: Kalanchoe flower plants prefer bright, indirect sunlight. However, they can tolerate direct morning sunlight as well. It is best to place them in indirect light, as strong midday sunlight can burn the leaves and flowers.
  • Watering: Kalanchoe flower plants do not need much water. Watering every 10-12 days is sufficient for the plant to grow well and produce beautiful flowers. Excess water can damage the leaves.
  • Soil: Well-drained loamy soil mixed with sand is ideal for Kalanchoe flower plants. Care should be taken to ensure that water does not accumulate in the soil. A good soil mixture includes 30% garden soil, 30% sand, 30% compost, and 10% cocopeat.
  • Temperature & Humidity: Kalanchoe flower plants cannot tolerate extreme cold. An ideal temperature range is 18-30 degrees Celsius. If the temperature drops below 5 degrees Celsius, the plant cannot survive. The plant does well in environments with sufficient humidity.
  • Fertilizer: Kalanchoe plants love fertilizer and are not as picky as other flower plants. Fertilizing once a month keeps the plant healthy. During winter, fertilizing every two months will promote abundant flowering. You can mix 10 grams of Epsom salt in 1 liter of water and apply it to the soil at the base of the plant once a month.
  • Pruning: Regular pruning keeps the shape of the plant beautiful. Stem cutting at regular intervals is recommended.
  • Propagation: Kalanchoe plants are easy to propagate by stem cutting. Cut a 2-3 inch branch and leave it in an open place for 2 days to dry. Then dip the cut part in root hormone and plant it in the ground. If kept in indirect light, new growth will be seen after one month.
  • Toxicity: This plant is very toxic. If there are children or pets in the room, keep the plant out of their reach.

Common Problems:

  1. If the temperature falls below 5 degrees Celsius, move the plant to a warmer location.
  2. If the temperature exceeds 35 degrees Celsius, the leaves may wilt and the flowers may lose their beauty. Keep the plant at a normal temperature to avoid this.
  3. If the leaves lose their succulent appearance, it indicates insufficient light. Move the plant to a location with bright, indirect light.
